Cross Country: prepared to go
On June 7, 2008, I am flying to Seattle. On June 9, I start off cycling residence from Anacortes, Washington to Bar Harbor: 4,300 miles following the Adventure Cycling Association’s Northern Tier and Lake Erie Connector routes by means of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Canada, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

The trip starts at sea level but speedily enters the North Cascades National Park. In the very first 300 miles, we have to get by way of five mountain passes, climbing yet again and once more to over six,000 feet.

I will be riding with at least two companions I met on the internet: Steve from St Louis and Jerry from Bay City, Michigan. We’ll meet up with other people along the way, and aim to finish in ten weeks.

I’ve invested far more than a year agonizing over my packing checklist, and the final couple months training on the totally-loaded bike over the hills of Acadia. Now, it is finally time to pack up and go.

I am very extremely excited about the adventure, the prospect of carrying out absolutely nothing but cycling for ten weeks, seeing the country from the ground, and going through pies and grilled cheese wherever they may possibly be identified. I’m also nervous about the physical and psychological problems, and unhappy about getting away from Nicole and the cats for so long.

I am so grateful for the tremendous volume of help from close friends and family for this journey: Nicole has tolerated two years of non-quit discussion about the journey and has agreed to dwell alone for a summer season (perhaps she’s seeking forward to that?) Angela and Kenny have lent me the two their pleasure and their cell telephone, and have planned a entertaining &quotbon voyage&quot get together Janet, Chuck and Judy have presented unflagging moral help for the journey, and have promised a &quotlast supper&quot prior to I go Denry has developed some entertaining music mixes (including two hrs of &quotcycling uphill&quot music, 1 hour of downhill) Jon and Joe at the Bar Harbor Bicycle Store have manufactured certain my bike is ready for something and my employer has worked outside all existing policies to permit me a leave of absence.
